About Stick Welders
A stick welder is the informal name given to a manual metal arc welding (MMA or MMAW) process that is used in standard applications requiring the connecting of most common alloys and metals. Stick welding machines form the weld by applying electrical current which creates an arc between an electrode, or meltable metal stick, and the workpiece. Also known as shielded metal arc welding (AKA SMAW welding), a stick welder is typically lighter and more portable than MIG welders and TIG welders, and requires no gas. The word “shielded” comes from the flux coating on the “sticks” that creates a shielding gas when heated to keep contaminants out of the weld. Be sure to see our stock of welding rods, or sticks (AKA consumable stick welding electrodes) used in stick welding. We supply Lincoln arc welders, Miller welding machines and other leading brands. Products vary by voltage, amps, duty cycle and other considerations.
