Solving Common Window Air Conditioner Issues

Window air conditioners are portable and simple to use. They’re ideal for small spaces and often the most convenient way to cool down a room, without doing a major installation. Once you’ve decided to install a window air conditioner though, you still have some maintenance to keep up with, like figuring out how to clean a window air conditioner or keep it from getting mold.

But sometimes, even more unique issues come up. In this article, we’re going to review how to build a window air conditioner support, how to vent a portable air conditioner without a window, and how to recharge a window air conditioner. Hopefully, resolving these common issues will help you avoid having to break a sweat.

How to Build a Window Air Conditioner Support

Larger window air conditioner units sometimes require a brace. Most units that require one will come with a brace, but if yours didn’t or you are just looking for a little extra support on a smaller unit, you can always make your own. L-brackets are one option. Start by determining the size and weight of your unit, then find the appropriate brackets at the store to meet your needs. Secure these brackets underneath your air conditioner and against the designated supporting wall.

You can also build similar types of brackets out of wood. Or you can simply purchase ready-made brackets that require no tools to install.

How to Use a Window Air Conditioner without a Window

If you don’t have a window in your room, you might consider using a portable air conditioner instead of a window unit. But most portable air conditioners also recommend venting the air out through a window. How do you vent a portable air conditioner without a window? There are a few ways to do this. While some people use dryer vents, most hoses won’t fit through this space. If yours does, it could be a viable option.

You can also vent through a drop ceiling if you have one, but you’ll want to make sure the area around the hose is securely sealed. This could cause a leak of hot air elsewhere, however. Perhaps the simplest option might be choosing an alternative room to receive the heat. In most cases, you might select a laundry room or pantry.  But if the idea of making other rooms uncomfortable sounds intolerable, consider using a sliding door or creating a hole yourself that goes outside. There are kits available made specifically for this purpose that will help you achieve the most professional results.

How to Recharge a Window Air Conditioner

Older window air conditioner units sometimes run low on refrigerant. But similar to how you can add more refrigerant to your car, you can also “recharge” a window air conditioner. This isn’t typically required, since refrigerant is meant to last for the lifetime of your unit. But accidental leaks happen.

Recharging your window air conditioner could require some effort, however. You’ll need to remove the back part of your AC unit to gain access. And if your unit is low on refrigerant, it’s very likely that it has an ongoing leak. Replacing the refrigerant will only temporarily fix your problem. At this point, it might be time to purchase a new unit.

Issues sometimes arise with AC units. Knowing how to clean a window air conditioner unit and keep it well maintained can help. But when it’s time to get a new one, figuring out what size of new window air conditioner you need or how to install a window air conditioner doesn’t have to be difficult.
