How to Install a Window Air Conditioner

Insufferably hot days without central air conditioning can leave even the toughest looking for relief. Fortunately, window air conditioning units are an excellent solution for your small business, as they’re reliable, durable, and will give you and your workers relief in no time. Though these window units may seem intimidating to install, you’ll be able to keep your cool with these hot tips.

Most window air conditioners are designed for vertical sliding or double-hung windows. You’ll want to start by carefully reading the manual of the unit you’ve purchased. AC units can be heavy, so consider doing the job with two people.

Step 1. Check Your Parts

Most units include screws, a window seal gasket, left- and right-side curtains for adjustable mounting, and some small, L-shaped brackets to help you secure the unit. You’ll also need a screwdriver—preferably a drill—to fasten the screws and possibly create holes at the bottom of your window to help secure your unit.

Step 2. Place the Unit in the Window

You’ll notice a metal piece at the top of your AC unit. This piece should stay inside your window once you pull it down. It will help carry the weight of your unit and stop it from slipping backward.

Start by opening your window (make sure your manual doesn’t require you to attach the accordion extensions first; some might).

Now lift the unit and place it at the center of the window. Most of the unit will remain outside, so be careful to support this part until you have secured it.

Step 3. Secure the AC Unit

With your window down, use the L-shaped brackets to attach the left and right sides of the metal bar on the AC unit to the bottom metal part of your window. This ensures the window can’t be opened with the unit in place. If you don’t have a drill, it may be tempting to skip this part or just use duct tape—but know that your unit won’t be fully secured if you do this.

After your unit is secured, it will lean slightly towards the outside. This is a good thing and ensures proper drainage inside the unit.

If you’re concerned about the stability of your AC, you might consider building a window air conditioner support.

Step 4. Adjust the AC Unit

Attach the accordion extensions to your unit (if you haven’t already).

Screw these extensions to the right and left sides of your window, then use the foam rubber stripping (window seal gasket) to cover any gaps where insects might be able to enter.

If you are trying to install a window air conditioner without screws, you can consider using tape to keep the extensions in place. It’s less dangerous than skipping the screws on step three, but you might risk letting unwanted pests into your home.

Congratulations, your window air conditioning unit is installed! Get ready to beat the heat no matter the temperature, and focus your attention on what matters most—your small business!
