4 Safety Tips for the Professional Tradesperson

Stay safe this National Safety Month–and all year long–with these four tips from KNIPEX Tools.

Tip 1: Understand Manufacturer’s Qualifications for Insulated Tools

Tools used on live installations must be manufactured and tested against strict occupational and safety standards such as the German DIN VDE 0105, the international EN 50110 and IEC 60364, and the USA NFPA 70E. KNIPEX Tools is proud to offer a line of insulated tools approved for work up to 1,000VAC.

Every insulated tool manufactured by KNIPEX undergoes, one by one, a dielectric strength test at 10,000VAC before it is brought to the market. This means that work in the area up to 1,000VAC has a safety buffer of ten times the permitted maximum limit. Other tests check the reliability of the insulation towards heat, cold, tensile, and impact force. In addition to the KNIPEX quality-assurance team, external institutes and test centers such as the VDE guarantee that all insulated criteria have been met. Always be aware of and comply with current, valid regulations when working on live installations.

Tip 2: Use Tethered Tools When Working at Heights

When working from heights there are several safety protocols to follow including securing tools via tether to prevent falling or dropping to the ground below. The KNIPEX Tethered Tools Program includes a range of pliers with tether attachment points integrated into the handle. It also includes lanyards and adapter straps that meet or exceed the ANSI/ISEA 121-2018 standard for Dropped Object Prevention. The carabiner includes a self-locking gate to prevent unintentional opening and a captive eye to prevent accidental detachment.

Tip 3: Always Use the Right Tool for the Right Job

The list of safety tips can feel endless and complicated at times. It’s best to keep things simple, easy to remember, and straightforward. That’s why practicing the “right tool, right job” mentality is so important. Understanding what a tool was designed for and how to properly use it is key to jobsite safety. For example, while it might be quicker to use that pair of lineman’s pliers you already have in your hand as a hammer, that’s not what it was designed to do. Best to put it down, grab the right tool, and get on with the job. What feels like a timesaver in the moment might lead to a more negative outcome than desired.

Tip 4: Wear Personal Protective Equipment

Wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment is just as important as having the right tool for the right job. For example, always wear approved eye protection while using the KNIPEX 8" CoBolt® Bolt Cutter when cutting material. Wearing insulated gloves when working with electricity is an added layer of protection from electric shock.

KNIPEX Tools takes safety seriously and understands the responsibility of having the KNIPEX name on not only our insulated and tethered tools, but all of our tools. Our pliers' performance, quality, precision, and durability remain the key differentiators between KNIPEX Tools and other pliers manufacturers.
