The design includes five equal horizontal stripes of alternating blue and white. The 3 blue stripes represent the 3 sections that the country was divided into during the independence wars. The 2 white strips sympolize the purity of the patriotic cause. There is a red triangle with a centered star in it. This symbolizes that the sky turned red with blood shed in battle. The white star stands for independence.Lopez carried this flag in battle at Cárdenas (1850) and Playitas (1851). Although López was not victorious, this was the first instance of the flag being raised in Cuba.
