The purpose of ground-fault protection is to measure the ground leakage current of an electrical installation, or part of an installation, and interrupt the power supply if the ground-fault current becomes dangerous to property. These can range from instantaneous (no intentional delay) to 4.5 seconds. The shortest delay will provide the greatest protection, while the longest will minimize nuisance tripping.
